  31.                                    Abstract
  32.  
  33.         In 1976   an   unmanned   NASA   Viking  spacecraft  successfully
  34.    photographed the surface of the planet  Mars.   In  the  subsequent 13
  35.    years, a mystery has loomed . . . a mile-long, 1500-ft  high  humanoid
  36.    "face" discovered in  a  northern  Martian  desert  called  "Cydonia."
  37.    Initially dismissed by NASA as "a  trick  of  light  and  shadow," new
  38.    analysis presented here reveals a far more complex  situation,  and  a
  39.    far more significant conclusion:
  40.  
  41.         The "face" and its surrounding "enigmatic landforms" appear to be
  42.    a carefully layed   out,   highly-sophisticated,  redundantly  encoded
  43.    "mathematical and geometric CETI message"  on the Martian landscape --
  44.    in the tradition of century-old proposals by Gauss, Lockyer, et al..
  45.  
  46.         This paper presents the evidence whereby the authors have reached
  47.    this "radical conclusion."  We -- one of us a former  NASA consultant,
  48.    the other a  geomorphologist  --  detail  the  extensive  geodedic and
  49.    mathematical analysis of "the Face"  we  have  conducted over the past
  50.    several years: specifically,  its  geometric  relationship  to  other,
  51.    equally enigmatic objects  in  the  immediate vicinity.  This evidence
  52.    includes multiple appearances of two  specific mathematical constants:
  53.    "e" and "pi," derived by angular measurement of the  placement  of key
  54.    morphological objects around the "face" and the discovery of redundant
  55.    angles and derived  constants  from  that  placement.   We  have  also
  56.    discovered the two  constants --  "e"  and  "pi"  --  "coded"  in  the
  57.    geodedic siting latitude of the "complex" on the planet.
  58.  
  59.         It is  this  multiple,  diversified,  but  converging   geodedic,
  60.    geometric and mathematical evidence that, in the authors' opinion, now
  61.    robustly supports the "radical conclusion" presented above.
  62.  
  63.         The geometry  and  mathematical  constants  we have discovered at
  64.    Cydonia appear to  be  a highly-specific  communication  of  "embedded
  65.    tetrahedral geometry."  It's   apparent   purpose:    the    geometric
  66.    prediction of a specific geodedic latitude -- 19.5 degrees N. and S. -
  67.    - resulting from  the  location  of  the  vertices of a "circumscribed
  68.    tetrahedran" rotated inside  a planetary  or  stellar  sphere.    This
  69.    conclusion is reinforced  by  the geomorphological  observation  of  a
  70.    major "tetrahedral pyramid"  at Cydonia -- connected geometrically (by
  71.    a 19.5-degree angle offset to the local  geodedic meridian) to equally
  72.    obvious morphological representations of "spheres" at Cydonia itself.
  73.  
  74.         The purpose of all this appears to be to direct attention towards
  75.    "something occurring at these two specific planetary latitudes."  When
  76.    examined by the authors, using published geodedic planetary  maps from
  77.    NASA and U.S  Geological  Survey sources, these latitudes are observed
  78.    to be associated with a hitherto unknown  planetary and stellar energy
  79.    phenomenon -- blatantly  emerging at these specific  latitudes  --  on
  80.    astronomical objects all  across  the solar system, including the Sun.
  81.    Further, the appearance of these "energy outpourings" seems to be
  82.    modulated by the  polarity  of the  planetary  (or  stellar)  magnetic
  83.    dipole moment --  raising, in the author's minds, the possibility that
  84.    the "message" is attempting to direct us to a verifiable astrophysical
  85.    manifestation of a  basic,  "unified   field,"   connecting  planetary
  86.    angular momentum, gravity,  and electromagnetism with  surface  energy
  87.    release.
  88.  
  89.         The possibility that "the message" is directing us to, not merely
  90.    energy transfer but  energy  generation,  is  also  considered in this
  91.    paper.  Several convergent observations  of  the  outer  planets, most
  92.    recently from Voyager 2, are presented to buttress our contention that
  93.    we may be  looking  at  a  new astrophysically - significant  form  of
  94.    energy.  Evidence is  also  presented that some manifestations of this
  95.    energy may be altering the local "gravitational  space-time metric" --
  96.    consistant with current  theoretical  interpretations  of  tetrahedral
  97.    mathematics by specialists,  as  "representative of higher-dimensional
  98.    n-spaces."
  99.  
  100.         The implications of these "real world" geophysical manifestations
  101.    of "unified field  tetrahedral  mathematics"  --  specific,  localized
  102.    energy release on  planetary  surfaces, apparently unrecognized  until
  103.    the "Cydonia tetrahedral  mathematics"  were decoded by the authors --
  104.    are profound: ranging from a possible  breakthrough  in the centuries-
  105.    long search for a Unified Field Theory connecting the  four  elemental
  106.    forces of Nature;  to  possible  technological  applications  of  this
  107.    knowledge -- including a new energy  source,  and  possibly,  ultimate
  108.    control of gravity itself.
  109.  
  110.         We conclude  by  urging immediate verification  of  the  "Cydonia
  111.    Message," via the  1992  unmanned Mars Observer spacecraft, as well as
  112.    detailed follow-up to our preliminary work presented here.

  141. Gee, a geomorphologist and someone with NASA connections - these would be great
  142. people to examine the Mars face if only they could spell 'SETI' and 
  143. tetrahedron, if they hadn't filled their paper with technobabble and 
  144. sensationalism, and if they actually gave any details about this huge energy
  145. flux that no one seems to have noticed before.

  147. I'm all for variety of thought and different approaches, but the whole face 
  148. issue would be much more credible if it's believers didn't all come across as
  149. writers for tabloids or folks who sense a conspiracy and don't seem to know
  150. much about they background anyway.

  267.    Richard Hoagland, author of "The Monuments of Mars" and founder of

  271.    questions I will conduct a brief interview with Dick which will

  276.    is.

  278.    (Ted) While many here tonight have read your book, others only know
  279.    of the "Face" on the Martian surface through tabloids such as the
  280.    "National Enquirer." I know that this Martian surface feature is
  281.    getting the serious attention of noted members of the scientific
  282.    community. Can you comment on the caliber of the team on the Mars
  283.    Project. GA

  285.    (Dick) Well, Ted, the list is constantly growing. We have some whom
  286.    have been involved almost from the beginning -like Dr. Mark
  287.    Carlotto, of the Analytic Science Corporation, in Reading Mass.
  288.    But, then we have "new blood" that comes to us out of the blue,
  289.    like Erol Torun of Defense Mapping who read my book last okfall,
  290.    was _determined_ to prove me wrong --and wound up discovering some
  291.    extraordinary stuff. So it just keeps growing.GA

  293.    (Ted) Dick, you recently started the Mars Mission as spin off of
  294.    the Mars Project.  Can you explain the charter and purpose of the
  295.    Mars Mission? GA
  296.  
  297.    (Dick)  When it became clear last Fall that we were really on to
  298.    something, when the numbers started really coming together I
  299.    realized that the biggest hurdle to getting verification was going
  300.    to be the _political_ process.  So, if the Project was the
  301.    originator of the research, the Mars Mission is the "home" of what
  302.    I like to think of as the necessary "democratization" of the data
  303.    to get the _political_ system up to speed for verification.  In
  304.    other words, we need to put the pressure on NASA to TAKE NEW
  305.    PICTURES.  And that means Congress and people who want to know if
  306.    this is real. GA

  308.    (Ted) Is there a way that interested people (even though they may
  309.    not be highly technical) can keep abreast of new development in
  310.    both the Mars Project and the Mars Mission? ----- Dick got knocked

  319.    abreast of new development in both the Mars Project and the Mars

  328.    front and the political front that we've decided to try the

  334.    person do to help get us back to Mars and get more data on the
  335.    "Face"? GA

  337.    (Dick H.) (Sorry for the delay -- we have cats) The main thing is
  338.    that we need new images of Cydonia, ASAP,  And NASA has steadfastly
  339.    refused to take them!!!  That simply doesn't make sense.  What
  340.    makes this science, as opposed to that "other stuff" is that THIS
  341.    IS TESTABLE.  It's that simple. The fact that NASA doesn't WANT to
  342.    subject this data to the only fair appraisal at this point, is very
  343.    suspicious. Which is why we were extremely gratified that we've
  344.    found such an excellent reception on Capitol Hill including an
  345.    invitation to meet with the Chairman (himself!) of the House
  346.    Committee on Science, Space and Technology a couple of weeks ago.
  347.    His attention to this problem is probably going to do more in the
  348.    long run to get us the answers we need (and deserve) than any other
  349.    single development on the political front in the last 13 years.
  350.    And, to keep that side of the system "honest" public interest
  351.    (citizen support for the simple idea of LOOKING) is ESSENTIAL.

  375.    of scientific ignorance, with this phony issue. It is the nadir of
  376.    anthroprocentric chauvanism to believe some advanced civilization
  377.    could detect the existence of man on this planet and do nothing
  378.    more than carve out a mountain that MIGHT be seen, by some tree
  379.    dwelling mammal.  How could THEY see so far ahead? GA.

  381.    (Dick H.) This goes to the heart of many issues, Paul I personally
  382.    believe it is us who are acting slightly anthropocentric.  We have
  383.    an "image," a "model" for how "ET" is "supposed" to behave.  If the
  384.    "signal" we get doesn't fit that "image," we -- NASA -- rejects it.
  385.    So, which is more anthropocentric? To pursue data where it leads.
  386.    Or to say, "the data doesn't exist?" GA

  388.    (Paul J. Burke/CA) Aren't the Mars imagers dead? How can NASA take
  389.    any more photos?

  391.    (Dick H.)  I don't see any connection.  The material "ruins" are
  392.    still there.  When Mars Observer gets there in 1993, all we want is
  393.    the Cydonia Region REIMAGED.  The objects (there is FAR more than
  394.    the "face") will still certainly be there. GA

  399.    mission,

  401.    (Dick H.)  It's not even that complicated.  Mars Observer will be
  402.    in a POLAR ORBIT.  It will inevitably fly over EVERY SQUARE INCH OF
  403.    MARS every 35 or 36 days. So, all NASA has to agree to is to take
  404.    the images at the designated time.  And they won't! GA

  411.    (Bert) Dick, do you know if the Soviets have an interest in Cydonia
  412.    and do you have any information relating to the AP release (a month
  413.    or so back) indicating the Soviets had observed something very
  414.    strange on the surface of Mars? GA

  416.    (Dick H.) I put several items relating to the past research history
  417.    of this into the Library earlier today (Ted, can tell you guys how
  418.    to get them out!) I can tell you this (as background to some of
  419.    that material, which relates to past dealings we've had with the
  420.    Soviets on this issue. Last January, one of our team -- Dr. Brian
  421.    O'Leary a former scientist-astronaut went personally to Moscow with
  422.    the pictures. His mission: to try to get Sagdeev and others to take
  423.    new images with the Phobos spacecraft.  They all sat there, looking
  424.    at the Carlotto enhancements and were VERY interested, according to
  425.    O'leary.  That was over a year ago. Late last year, in December,
  426.    just before the NASA briefing we did I got a letter from a Soviet
  427.    scientist whom we've been in direct contact with for about a year.
  428.    He's a specialist in "problems of extraterrestrial contact".  His
  429.    Ph.D.  is in this particular subject, in fact! Anyway, HE said the
  430.    new data was SO interesting, he was going to Sagdeev (then head of
  431.    the unmanned Phobos Mission) to try to get new images of Cydonia
  432.    from Phobos 2.  That was last December I, of course, immediately
  433.    shot back a reply telling him HOW the images might be taken
  434.    (inclination of orbit to the equator, etc.) So far -- this is MAY -
  435.    - nothing.  But the Soviet's HAVE announced some pretty peculiar
  436.    things around their Phobos mission including a Radio Moscow Report
  437.    that Marty Arant heard first-hand which had Orthodox Russian
  438.    priests going into the Moscow Phobos Control Center to "see the
  439.    Phobos images of Mars and to talk about the creation.  You figure
  440.    it out. GA

  457.    presuming that the majority of your work is concerned with the
  458.    photos that were taken in the early 70's, and are mostly concerned
  459.    with the "face" and what you perceive as structures my question is
  460.    this.  How many independent computer photo enhancements have been
  461.    performed by independent facilities, other than the Carlotto work
  462.    and if this is so important why is there so much "infighting" among
  463.    the various people working on this, such as John Brandenbergs
  464.    Cydonia Features, and Vince Di Pietro and Greg Molenaar.  Why is
  465.    there no co-operation?  GA

  468.    comes up against a problem that is really interesting very "human"

  478.    that confirms your theory?  Or is there only one? GA

  480.    (Dick H.) Good question. In "Monuments" I go into great detail on
  481.    three investigations.  Each of these did some imaging.  The first,
  482.    of course, was NASA! Surprised? It as NASA which first "found" this
  483.    object, and put it on the public record.  It was only after that,
  484.    that others namely DiPietro and Molenarr, at Goddard, in 1979 did
  485.    their "thing" -- found the SECOND, corroborating frames taken of
  486.    Cydonia at a higher sun-angle which has given us such great data to
  487.    actually work with.  They did enhancements, published and nothing
  488.    much happened for EIGHT YEARS. Then, in 1983 I got the images,
  489.    looked at them and realized that I was seeing not only a "face" but
  490.    other things which didn't belong there. That's when the third
  491.    IMAGING investigation began -- at SRI. Their Prime system did some
  492.    excellent work, using digital copies of the NASA Viking tapes.
  493.    That's when we turned to a FOURTH source, for "independent data" on
  494.    the imaging: Mark Carlotto.  Carlotto, I must say, has put the most
  495.    time and effort into extracting every bit of data from these tapes.
  496.    And he's brought not only new techniques to the imaging. He's also
  497.    "attacked" the problem with new ideas -- such as the "fractal
  498.    analysis" he's not done and submitted to the journals.  And every
  499.    time we use a new technique  we turn up DATA not noise.

  509.    the alignments that he shows among the various strange objects at
  510.    Cydonia is very hard to explain for example: l the edges of the d&m
  511.    pyramid are very fuzzy in the enhanced photos. I am not convinced
  512.    by the photos what is extraordinary is that the alignments of the
  513.    d&m with the bulls eye and the face and the cliff and the tholus
  514.    are exactly redefine the fuzzy edges of the d & m so it is not
  515.    necessary to see it clearly - the alignments sharply define the
  516.    edges.  Also, it is not hard to find very interesting alignments
  517.    for example; the cliff subtends the same angle from both the tip of
  518.    the d & m and from the city center bulls eye. That means that the
  519.    edges of the cliff, which are very well defined and the tip of the
  520.    d & m and the bulls eye must lie on the same circle.  By the way,
  521.    what features has John Brandenberg found - I have not heard of his
  522.    data before.  Also, you mentioned base 3 and 3609 on the phone
  523.    earlier my calculations show 360 base 10 to equal 111100 base 3.

  528.    first, that you have confused some of the work just a bit.  When I
  529.    got into this, back in 1983, it was precisely because I thought I
  530.    saw the potential for some remarkable relationships between some
  531.    intriguing  objects at Cydonia. I put these ideas into a VERY
  532.    primitive numerical "model" in "Monuments" I called it the
  533.    "relationship model" and felt that if we were going to ever know at
  534.    EXISTING image resolution what we were dealing with it would only
  535.    be through discovery of some very precise, provocative, and
  536.    repeating numerical RELATIONSHIPS between these objects. Little did
  537.    I know that that day would arrive much sooner than I thought when I
  538.    finished the book Erol, in the Fall of last year, in measuring.
  539.    ONE of the most fascinating "structures" near the "face": the so-
  540.    called "D&M Pyramid" discovered an extraordinary set of VERY
  541.    SPECIFIC relationships INTERNAL to this object.  I, in turn, in
  542.    remeasuring all the previous alignments, had noted in the book
  543.    between the objects that you cited -- the Face, the "City", the
  544.    "Cliff" and the "Tholus" (all objects which are much easier to talk
  545.    about if you have images and maps before you!)  Anyway, in
  546.    remeasuring those previously noted alignments, I discovered to my
  547.    immense surprise -- and satisfaction! -- that Torun's precise
  548.    numerical angles (and derived numerical constants which we shall
  549.    define in a moment) SHOWED UP -- not once . . . or twice . . .  but
  550.    perhaps HALF A DOZEN TIMES (I've lost exact count, at this point).
  551.    The point is this: you're right.  To me, the REALLY exciting stuff
  552.    is NOT that something "looks like a face" or "looks like a
  553.    Pyramid".  It's that Erol and I have discovered between us
  554.    something like two or three dozen REPEATING numerical relationships
  555.    and these have given us the SAME set of repeating mathematical
  556.    constants -- like "e" and "pi" -- again . . . and again . . .  and
  557.    again.  And these constants have now yielded a prediction as to the
  558.    very siting latitude of these objects on the planets's surface --.
  559.    Anyway, you're right.   THAT's the "ball to keep one's eye upon!

  684.    guys in town) then the ONLY way to find that out is through the

  688.    SIMPLY GETTING NEW IMAGES OF MARS.  There is no easy way to TEST

  805.    the Rubicon" on this one. The math is the key. How many "big"
  806.    questions in science are decided by things we CANNOT see -- quarks
  807.    black-hole models .. AIDS viruses?  If we have to recognize
  808.    something in these images, before we accept the "reality" of this,
  809.    then we're rejecting at least two hundred years of science! So, we
  810.    come back to the numbers. Erol discovered a specific set of numbers
  811.    in one object, after trying to DISPROVE my contention that this
  812.    object was important. I extended those specific numbers to the
  813.    whole Complex and found THE SAME quantities, expressed repeatedly
  814.    to ONE PART IN A THOUSAND!!! The probability that these serial
  815.    discoveries are chance is calculable by the same mathematics used
  816.    to calculate the odds of TWO engines failing on a 737 in England
  817.    and the results say we are NOT dealing with chance: it HAS to be

  907.    They had at least a year and a half to plan how to take new images.
  908.    Now, we have strange stories coming out of Radio Moscow Stories of
  909.    "strange, spindle-shaped objects and linear features that seem
  910.    rectilinear". If you put all of this together, you just MIGHT come
  911.    up with the idea that they have indeed taken some new images . . .
  912.    and they are "leaking" news to the West -just like they've done
  913.    before. Look at the details of the "spindle story":  They claim it
  914.    could be the "shadow of a spacecraft on the surface". If their
  915.    resolution is THAT good (do the calculation) then they have to have
